'One Tree'

Art Statement

A dramatic moment captures the desperate last embrace of a solitary couple in a devastated landscape. The figures of the lovers are entwined in the form of a single gnarled tree. I was inspired by a photo I took at Mt Field National Park in Tasmania of two fallen trees that had collapsed against each other during a fire, the remains were bleached and weathered by nature to create a fascinating sculpture. It was a powerful totem symbolising the devastation of bushfires on the environment and I wanted to personalise this ecological issue further by anthropomorphising the tree.
